Aims

1. To develop a method of persuasively proposing a novel;
2. To develop the ability to understand the market for novels relevant to the one proposed;
3. To develop an understanding of the demands of the opening chapter of a novel; 
4. To develop an understanding of generic forms of the novel;
5. To foster, with peer workshop support, the acquisition of narrative craft;
6. To provide practice in the production of work in a form acceptable to the publishing world.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Produce a novel proposal designed to persuade an agent or editor of the work's commercial viability.
2.
Analyse opening chapters from a writer's perspective.
3.
Produce the opening chapter of a novel that demonstrates the understanding of craft they have reached through engaging with the module materials – that is, the theory and examples of good practice that they have studied.
4.
Place a novel in terms of genre and market.
5.
Through editing and drafting, develop an initial idea into a polished form.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
During the module students will study:
• genre and market relevant to the novel they plan to write
• aspects of the publishing industry
• the shaping a novel for a particular market
• techniques of writing to persuade
• aspects of, and the narrative craft in, a set novel
• the opening chapters of several novels
• further develop the ability to read fiction from the perspective of a writer
Module Overview:
In this module, students will learn how to propose novels effectively, understand their target market, and master the art of crafting compelling opening chapters. They'll also explore various novel genres and develop essential narrative skills. Through peer workshops and hands-on practice, students will prepare work suitable for the publishing industry, all while gaining valuable insights into genre, market, and narrative craft.
Additional Information:
This module's assessments encourage students to plan, organize and structure a long-form piece of writing. In planning a novel, the student will have to problem solve and make decisions about character and plot.
