Aims

1. To develop writers' proficiency as primarily visual storytellers through analysis of existing TV and film and the scripts upon which they are predicated.
2. To understand and use the component parts of script (character, structure, editorial values and diversity) in order to create, develop and improve visual storytelling.
3. To create diversity champions capable of taking forward in creative processes the EDI values demanded by the TV and film industries.
4. To inculcate industry-standard working practices in terms of standard technical terminology, formatting and presentation, IT, and teamworking.
5. Further develop key research skills in order to produce a portfolio of selling documents to industry standard.
6. Further develop key scriptwriting skills based on theoretical analysis of existing works and craft texts.
7. Work collaboratively in writers' room environment.
8. To further develop the ability to communicate ideas effectively both verbally and in writing.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Demonstrate an understanding of film and TV as a primarily visual medium through practical application of storytelling techniques taught on the module.
2.
Diagnose and solve problems in a script: structure, story, character, pace and tone.
3.
Write a 15 minute screenplay film that qualifies to apply for funding criteria and which adheres to industry standards on formatting conventions and software.
4.
Evidence the student's research and development process, assessing the EDI value of screenplays, TV shows and films.
5.
Effectively communicate ideas in a concise and engaging way, verbally and on paper.
6.
Have experience working collaboratively in an environment similar to that of a professional writers' room, offering and accepting constructive criticism from their peers.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Students will workshop their writing in tutor-led and peer-led sessions, offering and receiving constructive criticism, reading and performing key scenes from their scripts and re-drafting and developing their work. Industry guest speakers will also share
their knowledge and experience in seminars and masterclasses.

This module provides work-based learning as the scripts will be required to meet the funding objectives as set out by the British Film Institute (BFI) https://network.bfi.org.uk/short-film-funding and/or other funders.
Key employability skills are embedded throughout the module. These include: Analysis, problem solving & decision making, communication, ICT, numeracy & financial literacy, planning & organisation and team work and collaboration, as well as creativity and enterprise.
