Aims
1. To deepen students' reading across forms of creative non-fiction and to cultivate independent reading;
2. To further develop the student's ability to use effective techniques in prose writing;
3. To expand the student's understanding of the range of prose writing;
4. To foster reflective writing about their reading and writing.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Demonstrate a wide range of directed/independent reading of creative non-fiction, and an ability to read as a writer.
2.
Produce a piece of original writing, which demonstrates an ability to use techniques found in creative non-fiction.
3.
Demonstrate an increased capacity for articulating the way reading and the study of craft shapes their original writing.
4.
Redraft their own original creative writing in the light of peer criticism, applying the outcomes of the workshops to the redrafting process.
5.
Contribute effectively to a workshop group.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
During the module students will:
Through in-class reading, students will read and write in various styles, including creative criticism, opinion, and personal essays, encouraging students to try writing in various forms within creative non-fiction.
Students will be given a range of writing exercises in-class to develop draft work in
preparation for assessments.
Workshops will be a key part of the seminars, allowing students to develop good practice when giving and receiving feedback.
Invited guest speakers will give students the opportunity to ask professional practitioners key questions relevant to their own writing.
