Learning Outcomes
Module Content
Students will:
• read and discuss the work of a range of contemporary poets, analysing the ways in which poets deploy imagery, voice,
form and structure, and how these elements are used in relation to subject matter
• engage in a variety of writing exercises and experiences to help generate ideas and poem drafts
• explore a range of source material for poems, such as visual art or translation
• reflect on, and analyse, how the work of other poets has helped shape and influence their own writing
• engage in workshops focusing on the drafting and editing of their poems, giving and receiving constructive feedback.
This module has creativity embedded throughout, with a heightened awareness of written and spoken communication and the power of language. Poems are designed to be heard as well as read. Students will be reading their own draft poetry aloud in class, thus developing self-confidence in their own voices and work.
