Aims

1. To introduce students to the growing field of the scholarly video essay and videographic criticism
2. To introduce students to the concepts of practice-based research illustrating how to manipulate, edit and produce video content as part of their academic studies

Learning Outcomes

1.
Produce a video essay that comments on theoretical/practical/historical concerns in Film Studies.
2.
Demonstrate proficiency in post-production video editing software.
3.
Appropriately reference text, audio, and video content within a video essay and accompanying written journal.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Students will be introduced to scholarly video essays and videographic criticism. Students will acquire the technical skills to complete a video essay, focusing on using post-production editing techniques to make an argument. Students will also explore the creative use and reuse of existing films, images, sounds and text as a form of scholarly engagement with practical and theoretical aspects of film studies. 
Module Overview:
Through a series of lectures and practical making workshops, students will be introduced to the video essay as a form of scholarly engagement with Film. They will gain familiarity with current practice within the academic video essay community and explore existing scholarship on the developing form of the scholarly video essay as a legitimate form of academic research and publication.
Additional Information:
This module provides a framework for students to develop a critical awareness of film studies and provides the analytical, reflexive, and practical skills needed to produce a scholarly video essay. Students will use and explore digital technologies to investigate films as their objects of study, using the material itself to ask questions of the medium.
