Aims

Songwriting Techniques 1 serves as a practical and theoretical introduction to songwriting with a primary focus on the generation, development and presentation of original songs. Students will be introduced to a range of key concepts in songwriting and will apply these in songs written.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Songwriting lectures will explore creative conventions in popular, contemporary and commercial songwriting and will make connections to related fundamental song forms, harmonic techniques and lyric writing conventions.

Songwriting seminars will explore the practical application of techniques studied within songwriting lectures and will be a forum for regular feedback and the development of their own and their peers’ new songs throughout the writing / rewriting process.

Score writing workshops will take students from the basic stages of using software through to more advanced techniques which will enable them to complete professional standard lead sheets.

Workshops will provide an opportunity for learners to receive critique and evaluation on personal songwriting projects and to analyse and evaluate their peers’ songs.
