Aims

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the construction and theories of narrative, authorship, the essential craft skills of scriptwriting and story writing, along with the ways in which writing is shaped by social and economic contexts and spatial dynamics.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate an understanding of the essential features of narratives and related theories and illustrate their effect in key examples.

Understand the key features of narrative, genre and authorship (along with related theories) and illustrate their significance with examples.
3.
Create dramatic stories and scripts (using established formats) to create films or performances, while considering and explaining creative decisions and key strategies for narrative creation, character development and scene/script writing.
4.
Consider the relationship between a single author and collaborative processes, while also analysing the interactions between audience, reception, content and meaning.
5.
Explain the role of technology and social media in the work of the contemporary performance maker.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
The module will cover a brief introduction to theories of content authorship and narrative. It will consider narrative conventions, script layout and vocabularies of visual and audio storytelling. It will explore the telling of stories in a digital age.
Module Overview:
This module will introduce the essential skills of script writing along with key theories/ideas such as narrative, genre, authorship, and the ways in which screenplays are shaped by social and economic contexts. Specifically, this module explores a broad range of topics which include: the creation of character, character arcs and archetypes; writing the anti-hero; narrative theories and structures; breaking stories and writing the scene/sequence; writing dialogue; collaborative writing and the TV Writers Room; fandoms and fan practices; and professional fan auteurs. Ultimately, this module will provide learners with the skills and knowledge required to create scripts and to reflect on the critical ideas that inform their work.
