Aims

The aim of this module is to introduce fundamental technical drawing and drafting skills and to identify the industry-recognised layouts of technical drawings for performance. By gaining an appreciation of the role technical drawing plays in the development of a design and its realisation and how we communicate performance designs through technical drawing, students will first develop competencies in using scale measuring and using drafting equipment to create hand-drawn technical drawings. Students will then progress to creating technical drawings and scale layouts using computer-aided design software; key practices that will form a strong foundation for future assessments and practical delivery.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Demonstrate competencies in creating hand drawn industry-standard scale drawings to communicate a technical design for performance.
2.
Create accurate computer-aided design drawing documents that demonstrate the key elements of technical drawing layouts for performance.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
This module will be delivered through classroom-based sessions and tutorials as well as through a series of detailed video tutorials that students can engage with at their own pace. Topics covered will include Introduction to technical drafting equipment and scale measurements. Introduction to CAD and the user interface, basic drawing and Modifying commands. Layers, text, and dimension styles, hatching and the title block. Layouts, plotting and exporting. Drafting construction drawings.
Module Overview:
Technical drawing is a fundamental skill for all backstage production disciplines, from creating scenic construction drawings or stage and lighting plans and models with clear and accurate information, to creating animated environments for video production or creating 3D printed elements for costumes and props. This module will introduce drafting and CAD skills, and industry-recognised layouts of technical drawings for performance.
