Aims

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the principles of using a camera for the recording of drama and factual material and associated audio. Students will also be introduced to the basics of post-production in terms of editing and audio, as well as storyboarding and key concepts in visual storytelling.

Learning Outcomes

Explain the core principles of camera and microphone technique in the filming of drama and factual material.

Undertake filming projects as an individual and as part of a team demonstrating competent control of key principles.
3.
Describe the relevance of key theories to film making practice and reference known examples of film or television to illustrate the account.
4.
Edit visual material and use post-production techniques to complete film and TV sequences and stories.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
The module will cover the key features of cameras including exposure, balance, focus control. It will also look at the basics of sound for film and TV. Editing and post-production sound will be considered. The module will place practical skills in the context of communication theory and the construction and deconstruction meaning in visual communication.
Module Overview:
Students will explore form and genre by producing a range of films, increasing in length and complexity across the module, before combining their experience and knowledge to produce a final film.

Students will also produce a reflective video essay exploring aspects of the film and the production process.
