Aims

This module provides you with the fundamental skills needed to prepare text and create performance for both a live audience and for screen.

You will establish key practitioner techniques and consider how to apply them, using appropriate terminology.

You will discover the need for a connected voice and an expressive body as a means for conveying story, whilst gaining a deeper understanding of your own voice and body as an instrument.

You will recognise the distinct challenges of performing for a live audience and for screen, reflecting on the different demands of each medium.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
You will undertake skills sessions introducing you to acting, movement and voice practitioners.

You will apply these skills to a series of scene studies taken from contemporary texts, for both a live audience of your peers and for screen. The scene studies will be chosen to allow casting that sits adjacent to your age and preferred gender.

The exploration of live work will be based on contemporary re-interpretations of the Stanislavskian system and the concept of Naturalism, referencing post-Stanislavskian practitioners like Katie Mitchell.

The exploration of screen work will re-examine stage Naturalism relative to cinematic Realism, referencing international movements like Italian Neo-Realism.
Module Overview:
In this module, you will examine different practitioner approaches and develop your acting skills through the contemporary re-interpretation of the Stanislavskian system.

Modern texts and screenplays from a diverse range of writers provide a framework for text analysis and the application of technique.

The emphasis is on process and not performance. You are encouraged to move beyond self-consciousness in a collaborative and supportive atmosphere with your peers.

Movement and voice studies underpin this module.
