Aims

This module aims to provide pragmatic technical approaches to textual and musical score analysis and the adoption of technique. You will recognise complimentary acting, singing and dance practitioner approaches, how to apply these in scenic preparation and to text. You will begin to use appropriate technical vocabularies, understand the importance of research and begin to identify the requirements, structures and expectations contained in a creative process.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
You will undertake a series of integrated technical sessions introducing you to acting, dance and singing practitioner techniques. In this introductory module you will be provided with an overview of fundamental technical principles; you will begin to understand overarching conceptual approaches to acting and musical theatre, their origins and practitioner exponents; in dance, you will begin to recognise the body, identifying notions of space, rhythm and meaning, as well as choreography; in voice and singing, you will start to recognise rudiments of pitch and resonance, vocal characteristics in relation to text, image and sound. You will begin to understand the demands of acting, singing and dance in a technical study, as well as recognising textual analysis and cultural/contextual research when applied to acting, including scene-into-song studies. You will begin to discover appropriate technical vocabularies applicable to integrated musical theatre principles, and methodological demands when working with others to assimilate technical principles. This learning is tested in a ‘naturalistic’ scene presentation to capture this learning, identifying strengths and areas for personal improvement. The trinity of interdisciplinary acting, singing and choreographed dance skills is core to the module delivery.
Module Overview:
In this module, you examine vital technical principles and practitioner approaches to develop a framework for analysing and realising text. Technical acting sessions contribute to acting through song, presenting scene-into-song episodes to peers. Dance and singing studies underpin this module, with an introduction to vocal and physical anatomy and physiology culminating in project work to reinforce these fundamentals.
