Aims
To provide a thorough grounding in the technologies and processes associated with studio-based recording, including the function of Digital Audio Workstations
Learning Outcomes
1.
Use basic recording studio technology including non-linear recording systems to competently and confidently record and edit audio.
2.
Select appropriate techniques to record and mix multitrack recordings involving acoustic and non-acoustic sources.
3.
Demonstrate a clear grasp of signal path and routing in an analogue studio environment.
4.
Identify and solve common technical faults in a studio environment.
5.
Recall and explain theoretical ideas and the underlying technologies of recording systems.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
• Analogue recording studio signal flow and considerations
• Microphone design and application
• Analogue and digital processors and their uses
• Desktop audio packages
• Basic editing and mixing in both an analogue and digital environment
• MIDI structure and implementation

Module Overview:
The lectures will be mainly based around the theory that underpins recording systems along with the peripherals that are usually associated them.
You will investigate the integration of audio and MIDI in modern recording systems through your coursework, which is structured to make you practically apply and demonstrate your understanding and knowledge of the recording environment as well as be creative in your use of the tools we are using.
You should always be aware that much of the theory and practice covered in this module is immediately transferable to other, more specialised areas.
This module is delivered in a lecture and workshop format. The lecture will discuss some of the theoretical or general concepts that you will cover practically in the workshop later.
