Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Definitions of childhood, historical and sociological aspects/influences, children’s cultural worlds, power of children in constructing their own childhood, political and economic factors which may influence the concept of childhood, childhood as a national and global concept, and transitions from childhood.
Additional Information:The main basis of this module is to provide students with an awareness of childhood as a theoretical concept, where key lectures act as catalysts for further independent study and application in the student’s work based setting. Seminar discussion and tutorials will offer the students the opportunity to share and discuss their work based findings in the light of their theoretical understanding of the ‘childhood’ concept. This module is placed at the start of the programme in order to allow students to contextualise the influences and factors affecting the childhood experience that will follow throughout the rest of the programme via module learning outcomes.
