Aims
1. To equip students with selected academic skills necessary for successful engagement with the Psychology degree programme.
2. To develop critical skills in Psychology.
3. To develop an understanding of the practice of psychological research, and ethical matters that arise from such practice.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Transform and synthesise a key issue in Psychology from original sources into their own words.
2.
Analyse journal papers to identify and describe conceptual, methodological and ethical issues, and key research findings
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:1. Tutorials - These will focus on academic skills such as literature searching, citing and referencing of sources, academic writing and authorship, and critical thinking.
2. Lectures – Some of the lectures will be skills-related and will tie in with the tutorials (e.g., presentation skills, critical analysis, ethical practice in writing and conducting research). Other lectures will focus on key issues in Psychology, and encourage students to challenge popular misconceptions related to the brain and behaviour.
Additional Information:Lectures on the module will introduce students to key issues in Psychology and explode common myths about the brain and behaviour. Tutorials will focus on academic skills such as literature searching, citing and referencing sources, academic writing and authorship, and critical thinking. Some lectures will tie into these tutorials and focus on skills such as critical analysis, or ethical practice in writing and conducting research.
