Aims
This module sets the context for further modules within this degree pathway. The module aims to provide a historical overview of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), introduce students to SEND provision (past and present), key legislation and broad areas of need.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Understand special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) from a historic perspective (segregation to integration to inclusion)
2.
Recognise provision available for learners with SEND and explain areas of need associated with SEND, in accordance with typical developmental milestones.
3.
Identify relevant policies that support learners with SEND.

• Historical overview of SEND
• SEND provision: past and present (introducing mainstream and special school provision)
• Key legislation and policy regarding SEND
• Identification and assessment of SEND
• Broad areas of need (linked to typical development milestones)
• The role of EHCPs
• Early childhood intervention
• Post-16 provision
