Aims
To enable students to explore and build understanding of key concepts and issues relating to their personal motivation to the study and practice of SEND, in ways that will develop and enhance the skills necessary for undertaking independent learning and study in higher education. It will also include opportunities for the development of research/ researcher knowledge and skills and provide an introduction to issues relating to disability, special educational needs and inclusion.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Explore key concepts relating to inclusion, special educational needs and disabilities.
2.
Recognise the skills necessary for undertaking independent learning and producing academic work.
3.
To identify and reflect upon the following aspects of self-awareness in respect of personal development and career planning: strengths and weaknesses, motivations and values, ability to work with others.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:• Introduction to key issues within disability, special educational needs and inclusion
• Contemporary understandings of barriers experienced by those with special educational needs and disabilities
• What is evidence?
• Introduction to models of disability
• Academic reading and note-taking
• Academic writing
• Presentation skills
• Research and academic skills for the study of Education
• Career and PDP planning (Career Smart)
