Aims

  1. Support students to develop their digital literacy and critical thinking.
  2. Foster students’ confidence in discussing a broad and diverse range of cultural references. 
  3. Support students to develop a contextual understanding of the roles and responsibilities associated with the production of visual communication through an enthusiastic, inquisitive and proactive approach to research.
  4. Support students to develop the skills and knowledge to articulate research.
  5. Support the development of a responsible approach to practice that reflects students’ interests, aspirations, ethical principles, lived experiences and personal values.

Learning Outcomes

Identify and review information and knowledge from a variety of relevant secondary sources, frameworks, traditions, practices, and knowledge systems

Select research themes and topics that reflects their interests, aspirations, ethical principles, lived experiences and personal values.

Describe and discuss viewpoints, insights, ideas, and approaches related to the roles and responsibilities associated with visual communication and the potential for practitioners to acts as agents of change

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
This syllabus is indicative: 
  1. Communication Skills: Formatting and clear presentation. 
  2. Research Approaches: Developing criticality; chunking; developing a basic research proposal.  
  3. Exploring socio-cultural contexts: Identity & Society; Decolonialism; Climate Crisis; Emerging Technology; critical theory; understanding culture; the politics of design; ideology and hegemony; sub-cultures and identity; subaltern visual cultures; capitalism and creativity; creativity & wellbeing; protest & activism; the manifesto; critical & speculative design; ethics & responsible practice  
Module Overview:
This module draws on historical and contemporary practice to consider the relationship between visual communication, culture and society exploring issues such as the climate crisis, decolonisation, emerging technology and identity to enable you to better understand the implications and intent of Graphic Design & Illustration practice in the context of a changing world.
