Aims

To provide a robust introduction to key laboratory and field skills relevant to the study of zoology. To introduce concepts of 'Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)' and safe and ethical working practices in the biosciences.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Prepare for and conduct laboratory and fieldwork safely including the completion of risk assessments and ethics forms.
2.
Use basic lab instruments correctly, including microscopes, pipettes, scales, spectrophotometers and pH meters.
3.
Apply basic concepts in chemistry and maths such as pH, buffering, and molarity.
4.
Record, present and communicate scientific information in an appropriate and professional manner, following principles of good laboratory practice.
5.
Identify a range of UK fauna.
6.
Apply creativity to different aspects of the scientific work, such as the design of experiments and the communication of science.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Introduction to basic laboratory instruments, methods and analytical techniques. Data collection and recording including 'Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)'. Safe and ethical work practices including risk assessments and ethical approval. Introduction to field survey techniques. Identification of a range of UK fauna including invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Introduction to measuring animal behaviour. Team work and confidence building.
Module Overview:
This module introduces you to a range of key laboratory and field skills relevant to the study of zoology. You will also be introduced to concepts of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and safe and ethical working practices in the biosciences.
Additional Information:This module introduces a range of key laboratory and field skills relevant to the study of zoology. The practical skills assessment is a competency assessment and must be passed to pass the module. The module includes a short UK residential field course.
