Aims
To outline key developments in the history of the artist. To examine them in the context of films, monographs and autobiography. To introduce basic materials and techniques used by artists and develop an understanding of these.

This module will outline key developments in the history of the artist. Students will examine them in the context of films, monographs and autobiography to introduce basic materials and techniques used by artists and develop an understanding of these.
This module will outline key developments in the history of the artist. Students will examine them in the context of films, monographs and autobiography to introduce basic materials and techniques used by artists and develop an understanding of these.
Additional Information:
The module examines the ways in which the artist has been represented under the aegis of academicism and modernism from the 16th to the 21st century. Looking at how the fine arts have been variously institutionalised and how artists have been professionalised, it considers the implications of the monopoly academies had over the artist and the types of art practices they engaged with. It examines the shifts in post-romantic notions of the artist and how art practices changed with the advent of the modernist art school. The module also introduces students to practical materials and techniques used and developed by artists and encourages students to see the relationship between materials and style.
