Aims
To develop an understanding of the sociological explanations of the causes, consequences and responses to globalization and inequality in a range of societies from both the Global South and North.
Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate a knowledge of the complexities of defining 'globalization' according to a variety of competing perspectives.
2.
Explain the causes and consequences that a key global issue poses to society.
3.
Examine the impact of alternative responses to a key global issue.
4.
Develop group work and visual presentation skills essential for the workplace.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Consider a range of definitions and measurements of ‘globalization’ and global inequality.
Explore the conceptualization of the Global North and South.
Provide an overview of slavery, colonisation in the creation of ‘global world’ and global inequalities.
Outline of competing theoretical perspectives on defining ‘globalization, development and inequality in a global context.
Introduce a number of case studies such as development, trade, gender and trafficking and explore the impacts of and potential responses and solutions to address inequality.

Additional Information:Through a series of lectures and seminars the process of globalization, development and inequality will be explored and key theories that explain global inequalities will be outlined. Seminars and lectures will support students learning and enable the meaning of globalization to be explored and the competing theories that explain global inequalities to be considered. Case studies will be used to provide examples of contemporary issues and the range of social action that can take pace in an attempt to address these inequalities.
