Aims
To raise student midwives’ consciousness of public health, enabling awareness of the importance of the midwife in securing better health outcomes for mothers, babies and families.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Understand the role of the midwife in public health.
2.
Explain aspects of public health that relate to midwifery practice.
3.
Identify how lifestyle can impact upon the health of society.
4.
Demonstrate the application of knowledge of public health and of the childbirth continuum, to ensure that women and their families are prepared for pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Epidemiology; health models; healthy life styles; brief interventions; community action; social prescribing; disease process; nutrition; obesity; mental health wellbeing; safeguarding; substance misuse; alcohol; smoking; infant feeding (BFI standards); culture and diversity; role of antenatal education in public health; providing an antenatal education class.

Additional Information:The module enables students to recognise health promotion rather than the management of disease and ill health. The role of the midwife today is further entrenched in the public agenda. This module will enable the students to explore societal challenges, public health, health promotion, and health protection.
