Aims

1. To familiarise students with the nature and significance of political activism, including its role in raising political awareness and calling for change in society. 2. To illustrate different forms that conscious citizens may participate in political activities. 3. To critically examine relationships between political activism and the state, and to have an overall understanding about possible political space under different types of authorities. 4. To reflect on the roles and responsibilities of individuals to the development of their community and society at the domestic and international levels.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Discuss how political activism can affect society at both the domestic and international levels.
2.
Identify ways that individuals raise political issues to draw public attention.
3.
Display knowledge on the limits and boundaries of different forms of political activism.
4.
Identify and reflect upon personal political development and how to be actively involved in politics.
5.
Identify and reflect upon the following aspects of self-awareness in respect of personal development and career planning: strengths and weaknesses, motivations and values, ability to work with others

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Topics to be covered may include: • Understanding your political voice • The options available to you for activism • Confronting violence in activism – terrorists and freedom fighters • Forensic Architecture – how to critique state-sponsored violence • Working for government – FCO, DfID etc. • What does a Global Citizen do in their spare time? • Working for a Think Tank • Working in the field • Working at a multinational institution
Module Overview:
By providing you with an understanding on how you can engage with the world, this module helps encourage your political development. It is not the purpose of the module to tell you what to believe in but it is responsible for showing you how you can advocate your political positions. This module brings in activists, experts and scholars to discuss how they are involved in politics in order to give you a grounding of the different ways in which you can engage with your own politics.
