Aims

To provide students with the technical and theoretical knowledge and the practical skills related to volume crime scene examinations. Students will develop investigation skills in relation to processing various crime scenes such as a house, or vehicle. They will also develop an understanding of the standard operating procedures along with the ISO requirements associated with comprehensive documentation and quality control. Students will develop practical skills in crime scene photography, fingermark recovery and comparisons, footwear mark recovery, and evidence packaging techniques.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The roles and responsibilities at a volume crime scene and how they are investigated. Crime scene documentation methods, including contemporaneous note taking, crime scene sketches and an introduction to basic crime scene photography. The identification, recovery and packaging of a range of different forensic evidence types. Fingermark identification, enhancement, recovery, and comparison. Footwear mark identification and recovery. This module includes the use of case studies and practical exercises. These practical sessions and demonstrations will give students the opportunity to use current methods to identify and recover evidence from crime scenes.
Module Overview:
This module introduces you to crime scene investigation so you can develop skills such as: analysis and problem solving, written communication and team work. The basic crime scene skills of photography, note taking, and sketching are taught along with the concept of recovery, enhancement and comparison of fingerprints.
Additional Information:This module introduces crime scene investigation. Skills developed during this module include: analysis and problem solving, written communication and team work. Footwear recovery is also included and students will be able to photograph and recover footwear marks using various techniques. The module consists of lectures followed by practical sessions and workshops and will include the use of case studies.
