Aims
1. To give students a grounding in cross-cultural and trans-historical mythic and folk tale story structures and the ways in which they continue to inform creative writing.
2. To facilitate the creative writing skills to develop new and original work from existing ideas and concepts.
3. To communicate through the written word concrete ideas and abstract concepts, displaying an ability to articulate a critical understanding of Myth and Folk Tale, negotiating critical, contextual, historical, conceptual and ethical dimensions.
Learning Outcomes

Draw on existing examples of Myth to produce new and original work.

Critically analyse and make connections between Myth and Metaphor across Cultures.

Contextualise their own work within the writing traditions that precede and surround them.

Outline Syllabus:
We will focus on the influence of Myth, Folk Tale and Metaphor and how these story structures and character archetypes have informed and continue to inform storytelling and creative writing. It will foster the students' ability to conduct independent research and then to use this to inform their creative and critical writing.

The focus on world myth creates opportunities to research and reflect across cultures. The adaptation of an existing myth into an original form of writing requires creativity, enterprise and analysis, problem solving and editorial decision making.
