Aims
1. To scrutinise published writers' strategies for creating characters.
2. Understand the techniques involved in characterization and to move beyond received ideas or stale representations.
3. To explore the commonalities and differences around characterization across a range of forms of creative writing.
4. To introduce students to aspects of story structure.
5. To introduce students to good workshop practice at undergraduate level.
6. To enable students to join in discussion, debate and exercises that reveal engagement with the course.
Learning Outcomes

Develop a sense of a character's voice, considering phrasing, idiolect and rhythm of speech.

Evidence a rigorous approach to research using a range of sources.

Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
During the module students will:
1. Analyse aspects of character development, characterisation and story structure across various forms of writing including prose, creative non-fiction, script, poetry.
2. Read and view a wide range of relevant creative and critical texts.
3. Focus on key aspects of the writing process, specifically how research generates new material.
4. Engage in exercises that encourage reading for technique.
5. Engage in sharing and group discussion of students' own work.

Module Overview:
The module explores the building blocks of character development and character driven story lines through various forms of writing and requires the student to evidence a variety of research skills and evidence professional written and communication skills, and collaboration between students as they are introduced to workshopping techniques.

This module is designed to encourage consistent engagement, with smaller assessment items that build on each other in terms of developing a character, which will lead into better developed stories and characters. It aims to evidence the transferable nature of character development across a range of forms.
Key employability skills: Creativity and enterprise, professional written and spoken communication, ICT and technology, analysis, problem solving and decision making.
