Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Through screenings, lectures, seminars and workshops students will be introduced to the different modes of representation in British social realist films. These modes of representation will be analysed in relation to the social and cultural contexts of production. Students will also gain insight into the pre-production process of idea development for producing a social realist film.
Module Overview:
This module will outline the social realist traditions associated with British cinema. After establishing the initial links with documentary film, students will understand how social realism has developed from the early 20th Century up until the modern day. Students can then use this knowledge in order to develop a pre-production portfolio of their own, which has the potential to be developed into a film at a later date on production modules on the programme.
Additional Information:
Particular emphasis will focus on the work of the British Documentary Film Movement, as well as the work of The Free Cinema Movement and Ken Loach, Mike Leigh, Shane Meadows, Andrea Arnold, Steve McQueen and Lynne Ramsay
