Aims

1. To introduce students to practice based theories about narrative. 2. To equip students with knowledge to understand how narratives are constructed. 3. To provide students with the critical skills and language to create and discuss narratives.

Learning Outcomes

Create and present a short narrative for a media project.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Through a series of lectures and seminars students will gain an understanding of Storytelling including: 1. Idea creation (ethnography) 2. Research 3. Story, plot, narrative (three act structure) 4. Documentary narrative 5. Fictional Narrative, including characterisation 6. Nonlinear narratives and single image 7. Interactive 8. Reflective writing & the video essay 9. Software (mind mapping, write frames, scriptwriting) 10. Presentations and pitching
Module Overview:
Lectures will provide introductions to narrative theories which will then be applied to group work and discussions in seminars. The workshop series will develop scholarship skills including Microsoft Office Tools, Harvard Referencing, using appendices and layout features. The tone of Essays, Reports and Reflective Essays will also be explored.
Additional Information:Weekly 2-hour lectures will introduce themes to the full cohort. In smaller 2-hour seminar groups weekly themes will be discussed, analysed culturally, and applied to their own work. In collaboration with the library team where possible, the workshop strand will introduce Harvard referencing and resources. Library research tools. Word capabilities and scholarship conventions in higher education.
