Aims
The Intelligence Cycle forms the basis of intelligence collection, assessment and development processes across the public and private sector. In this module apprentices will be introduced to the Cycle from an analytical perspective and explore their role within the wider context of an intelligence function. Particularly with respect to identifying intelligence sources and opportunities, establishing intelligence requirements, and evaluating content for relevance and validity. The module therefore aims to equip apprentices with the skills and knowledge to play and active role in the Intelligence Cycle, contributing to decision making and the ongoing development of the intelligence picture.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Examine the role of the intelligence analyst within each phase of the Intelligence Cycle.
2.
Evaluate information and intelligence for relevancy and validity, and explain the consequences of this for the analytical process.
3.
Identify and prioritise intelligence requirements, including determining appropriate open and closed sources by which they may be fulfilled.
4.
Apply policy, codes of practice and theory to the specifics of the analytical context and practice.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
- Intelligence Cycle overview
- Setting the direction - Intelligence gaps and prioritization, intelligence requirements, collection planning.
- Intelligence collection - Open and closed sources of intelligence, human intelligence, digital intelligence.
- Intelligence processing - Collation, validation, and evaluation of intelligence.
- Intelligence analysis - Tactical and strategic intelligence products
- Dissemination and feedback
- Working with open source intelligence
- Academic skills focus - Constructing an argument, critical thinking
Module Overview:
This module seeks to empower apprentices to play an active role in the intelligence context through understanding the contribution of the analyst at each stage of the Intelligence Cycle. Starting with the role of the analyst in identifying and prioritizing the intelligence requirements, apprentices will then explore the range of sources available to fulfill these. Before progressing to consider the implications of the source for the validity of the information obtained and the consequences for the resultant analysis. Apprentices will then consider the nature of tactical and strategic intelligence products and the implications of these for the Intelligence Cycle, alongside techniques for disseminating and receiving feedback on these. Finally, apprentices will explore specific considerations when working with open source intelligence and data, recognizing security, legal, ethical, integrity and validity requirements associated with these types of information and methods to mitigate associated risks.
