Aims

Music Theory is designed to give performing artists the basic ability to understand music notation at a practical level. Specific module aims include the development of: - An understanding of the notated language of music - The ability to decode (read) and encode (write) music notation - An understanding of basic functional harmony - A foundation for further study of music through notation

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The syllabus will provide the students with an overview of western music conventions, including; notation, time and key signature, scales and chords, rhythms, melody, and basic harmony. Students will be given the opportunity to develop both music reading skills and music writing skills. The syllabus will be based around the concept of music theory as a development tool for the understanding of music for performance. Formative approaches will include feedback on weekly classroom tasks, and homework.
