Aims

To equip students with both the English language and academic skills they need to successfully meet the communicative demands of their ongoing study. To provide students with the appropriate amount and level of teaching based on their English language proficiency on entry to the programme. To introduce students to Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and prepare them culturally for life and study at a UK higher education institution.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Write successfully using English at an academic level in terms of planning, producing and editing a piece of relevant extended writing. The student will also be able to use a wide range of grammatical structures, cohesive devices and academic vocabulary.
2.
Read effectively at an academic level to quickly select, evaluate and critically respond to written texts by paraphrasing and using their own words. The student will also be able to synthesise information from a variety of written academic sources into their work using appropriate academic conventions.
3.
Speak within an academic environment with confidence, and in particular give academic presentations, answer follow-up questions, and make valid contributions in academic seminar discussions.
4.
Listen effectively within an academic setting to extract key and supporting information, and take useful retrievable notes in order to summarise and respond to content.
