Aims

To develop the position of paramedics within the public health agenda and to encourage appreciation of the underlying knowledge and strategies that shape the responses to public health threats.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate an understanding of a critical approach to the strategic provision of paramedicine to meet public health needs.

Critically review the causes of violence and the relationship between violence and health.

Apply the key concepts of epidemiology to public health issues.

Outline Syllabus:An overview of health and public health. Determinants of health Theories of violence Health promotion strategies The Paramedic response to public health crises Epidemiology as a resource for the Paramedic Paramedic interventions in contemporary public health issues. The international public health picture: learning from paramedics in other countries.

Additional Information:Public Health for the Paramedic offers the student a unique opportunity to develop their understanding and appreciation of the public health agenda. The advancement within paramedicine in the last decade and the expectations placed on practitioners offers real challenges for those that manage patients in the out of hospital setting. This module will add weight to the student’s knowledge and understanding of strategies that shape responses to public health and the associated threats. Further the student will be able to analyse the impact of violence and concepts of epidemiology in relation to public health. Although the module is orientated towards the paramedic, the module is available to other healthcare professionals and would be of real value to them. 1.The module learning outcomes and relevant subject benchmark statements are in line with the QAA framework for higher education qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The module is aligned to the Level 7 descriptors for a Level 7 Higher Education Qualification. 2.The module is delivered over one semester. 3.The criteria for admission to the module is that candidates are currently working as a registered professional in a relevant area of practice. Ideally candidates will have studied at degree (level 6) however if this is not the case the applicants skills and professional experience will be discussed to allow the module leader to assess capability to study at level 7 4.The students have access to a VLE and the University's other range of electronic support such as access to the electronic library facilities. The students also have access to the module leader through phone contact, emails and face to face meetings. A module guide is also provided which guides students to the wider range of support available. 5.The programme is assessed and run in line with the Academic Framework 2016-17 https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/~/media/sample-sharepoint-libraries/policy-documents/247.pdf 7.Attendance is required throughout the module and will be monitored as required by HENW. 8.Module written in 2016 9.The methods for improving the quality and standards of learning are as follows:  Annual monitoring Review  Feedback from the students and Boards of Study  Reports from External Examiner  Ensuring the module reflects the values of the current teaching and learning strategy 10. This is a CPD stand alone and an option module as part of - MSc Paramedicine and the MSC Advanced Health Care Practice Pathway. An appropriately qualified external examiner will be selected from the MSc Advanced Practice suite of examiners. 11. The CPD Apply programme code is 35502. The self-funding programme code is 36063.
