Aims
1. To equip students with the knowledge of how media law and regulation will affect the day-to-day work of journalists in a variety of roles
2. To equip students with the knowledge of how journalists cover court cases and comply with the law.
3. To give students an understanding of the many ethical issues which confront journalists in their day-to-day work and their impact on society
Learning Outcomes
1.
Understand the legal system, the courts processes, terminology and hierarchy of
the courts
2.
Understand and evaluate the general principles and application of key laws
affecting journalists with a critical understanding of defamation, contempt of court,
confidentiality, copyright.
3.
Apply in scenarios a critical understanding of how legislation affects how
journalists cover court cases.
4.
Understand the ethical frameworks established by industry codes and how they
apply to key issues facing journalists including the protection of the confidentiality
of sources.
5.
Apply in scenarios the provisions of regulatory codes and demonstrate a critical
understanding and evaluation of the importance of honouring the spirit of the
codes as well as their specific provisions.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Basic knowledge of the legal system, including of court processes the hierarchy of the courts; Contempt of court and related matters; the rules of the court protecting anonymity in the reporting of children and sexual offences; reporting the
courts – court procedure and reporting restrictions; open justice and challenging court orders; defamation and related matters; copyright; privacy and confidentiality; regulation in Greek media law; ethics in newsgathering – including reporting children and vulnerable people; protecting journalists' sources and the right to report
