Aims

This module examines Environmental Assessments

Outline Syllabus:The student will cover the following aspects: The principles and historical context Sources of environmental assessment law Types of environmental assessment The actors in the process The principles and origins of EIA in the UK The legislation The EIA process and practice Publicity and procedures upon submission of planning application Evaluating the ES – the Environmental Assessment European and UK case law Update of the EIA Regulations and review of the EIA Directive Origins and issues in international EIA EIA and the general principles of international environmental law Sources of International EIA obligations – non-binding and binding instruments Espoo Convention and the SEA Protocol Sources of international EIA obligations, international EIA Case Law and customary law International Organisations – EIA, the development banks and the Equator principles The principles and origins of SEA The European Directive and UK Legislation The SEA process and practice Sustainability appraisals European and UK Case Law Appropriate assessment Sustainability assessments for new development Environmental risk assessment
