Aims
This module explores the law regulating the powers available to Her Majesty’s Coroners in England and Wales when investigating sudden and unexpected deaths that occur in their jurisdiction. It will encompass matters pertinent to inter alia, criminal investigations, deaths in hospitals and other health care settings, deaths in custody and deaths in the workplace. The procedure for reporting deaths and the relevance of Shipman will also be covered. There is also scope to cover other coronial matters such as Treasure.
Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate the ability to identify and prioritise source materials needed for a proper understanding of the subject

Undertake a critical awareness of the issues and problems raised by the use of Judicial Review

Analyse and critically appreciate the work of the office of Her Majesty’s Coroner

Interpret relevant case law, and the ability to apply it critically in a variety of contexts
