Aims
1. To understand the philosophical underpinnings of criminology and social policy research and practice.
2. To evaluate and understand the contested and political nature of knowledge and the complex relationship between social research and the policy environment.
3. To critically evaluate a range of quantitative and qualitative research methods used in relevant fields of enquiry.
4. To develop advanced data analysis skills, including the use of specialist software tools.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the philosophical underpinnings of criminological and social policy research.
2.
Critically examine the influence of stakeholders on the design, delivery and outcomes in the research process.
3.
Demonstrate a critical awareness of the relative advantages and disadvantages of qualitative and quantitative methods, to make informed decisions about their suitability for a particular research need.
4.
Demonstrate an ability to apply appropriate analyses to different types of data.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:The course will cover the following areas: research methodology and its links with epistemology, ontology and wider philosophies of knowledge production; qualitative methods; quantitative methods; data analysis and processing; research ethics.
Additional Information:The module focuses on the development and application of key quantitative and qualitative methods for social data investigation and problem-solving. Familiarity with a range of methods and competencies to critique and make appropriate use of quantitative and qualitative approaches within real world contexts is a key aim as is the development of career-ready methodological skills
