Aims

1. To critically assess the social, economic and political forces that shape contemporary Asia-Pacific.
2. To understand the trajectories of state-formation of major powers in the region, such as China, Japan, Korea and the Southeast Asia.
3. To critically examine the longue duree history that has produced the international politics of the region.
4. To explore variegated developmental forces, such as social revolution and economic reforms in different countries that have shaped the region.
5. To critically evaluate the region's role in world politics.

Module Overview:
The module is designated to steer the students to apply general understanding ofinternational relations to analysing a particular region in world system. It will take acritical look at IR theories from regional and empirical points of view, but also, itbrings history and realities together into some common analytical frameworks. Theobjective of the module is to enable the students to analyse contemporary issues ofthe Asia-Pacific region and be able to pinpoint its significance in world politics, so themodule will be taught by closely engaging provocative debates on contemporaryevents, headlines and widest media coverage of the region.
