Aims

1. Provide advanced knowledge and critical understanding of hypothesis formation in selecting an appropriate research design for a given research question. 2. Provide advanced knowledge of the main methods of academic enquiry within the field of creative performance practice. 3. Enhance discernment in undertaking bibliographical searches and enhance precision in the categorisation and critical evaluation of a broad range of concepts. 4. Consider the range of ethical considerations that need to be addressed before undertaking any line of empirical research activity. 5. Enhance practical research skills by critiquing existing research, undertaking other analysis in directed self-study and discussing findings.

Communicate academic results and research findings accurately, with well-structured and coherent arguments in an effective and fluent manner in an academic written form.

Demonstrate mastery of the intricacies of advanced academic writing.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The module will equip students with the necessary training in a broad range of research skills, with the express aim of preparing them for postgraduate level writing and research, and ultimately for their dissertation. Key topics will include academic writing and linguistics; bibliographical searches and construction of a bibliography; undertaking a literary review; hypothesis formation; falsifiability; ethical procedures; and use of quantitative and qualitative methodologies in the field of creative performance practice. The content of the unseen assessment paper will be based on the topics as covered within face-to-face delivery and ask students to pay attention to style, format, syntax/grammar, paragraphing, use of references and bibliographic sources, structure of information and the target audience for the piece.
Additional Information:Learning materials will be issued either during the class or made available online in preparation for use in the next class. Assessment is via an exam.
