Module Content
Outline Syllabus:The module covers key skills and knowledge for forensic psychology and problem-based learning in which you can apply your forensic psychology knowledge, e.g. assessment and management of offenders. Problems will include a selection from the following: intimate partner abuse, suicide and self-harm, gang-related crime, terrorism, the effects of childhood experiences on crime related behaviours, the effects of developmental disorders on individuals through the criminal justice system, arson, victims of crime psychopathy plus other topics as relevant to contemporary societies.
Additional Information:When you hear about forensic psychology, what comes to mind? Do you envision mysterious sleuths who solve crimes? Do you think of a criminal profiler who gets inside the mind of a killer in order to predict his next move? While there are probably a few forensic psychologists who fit these stereotypes, these highly-glamorized ideas are not the norm. So what exactly is forensic psychology and what do forensic psychologists do? Forensic psychology is the application of the science and profession of psychology to questions and issues relating to law and the legal system. It is a specialist branch that deals with issues that connect psychology and law, including family law. Interest in forensic psychology has grown significantly in recent years. It takes an individual differences approach to explanations of criminal behaviour looking at issues such as personality, gender, mental health, mood, motivation and developmental issues. In its current form, the forensic psychology module explicitly develops high level graduate skills, employability and psychological literacy. Psychologically literate students are critical scientific thinkers and ethical and socially responsible participants in their communities. In researching real-world problems faced by society, students on this module can claim to be psychologically literate with skills valued by employers generally and not just in the forensic field.
