Aims

To provide a thorough understanding of academic research methods and methodologies suitable for journalism social research and the production of research papers and dissertations at masters level.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate knowledge of academic research methods;

Critically analyse key research methodologies;

Evaluate and select appropriate research methods for dissertation;

Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of reliability and validity in social research;

Clearly define a question appropriate to a journalism masters dissertation;

Plan and consider the execution of a masters-level social research project.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Choosing research topics: research aims/objectives, research questions and hypothesis; literature review and underpinning theories; paradigms: positivism and interpretivism; research methodology: quantitative and qualitative approaches; research methods: survey, content analysis, interview and focus group; data analysis and use of software; validity and reliability in research; ethical issues in academic research; producing a research project.
Additional Information:This module teaches the skills required for doing the Masters dissertation, including providing an understanding of academic research methods and the production of research papers and dissertations. It should develop the students' research skills and allow them to plan and develop the early part of the dissertation.
