Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Through the module, students will be introduced to a range of theatre texts and forms from the contemporary theatre and performing arts environment. Specifically works – such as new writing, contemporary texts and scripts, post-dramatic plays etc. – will be explored, evaluated, and interrogated through practice with an advanced level of theoretical and critical understanding. Contemporary theatrical vocabulary and repertoire will be used to develop actors’ abilities to recognise dramatic / theatrical potential within such texts and in other cognate forms of theatre and performance. Through this process (which will include studio exercises, personally driven analyses, and workshop sessions), the student will be expected to investigate and recognise the quality of “the contemporary actor”, able to work in different contexts, areas and interacting with different kinds of contemporary material. In addition, the student will be introduced to a range of approaches and strategies for dramatic improvisation that will enrich and strengthen their deepening freedom of action, trust, creativity, teamwork, and discipline. Finally, students will be introduced to selected advanced stage and screen acting training techniques, directorial methods and creative strategies developed by seminal contemporary innovators. This exploration aims to develop their insight to how these theatre-makers (renowned for their focus on actor training, research and stylistic invention) have advanced the craft and knowledge of actor-centred approaches to theatre.
Additional Information:The module enables a critical analysis and application of contemporary acting theory, techniques and contexts of acting. Assessment is via a rehearsal period preparing for one public performance.
