Aims
1.To allow students to pursue a systematic study of international relations relevant to the work of mainstream news organisations.
2. To examine the theory and practice of international relations focusing in particular on cultural, economic and security relations.
3. To enable students to draw upon the analyses and insights of IR scholars in gathering and constructing international news.
Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the international system and the changing
international order
2.
Critically examine the key issues and controversies relating to the diplomatic,
security, economic and cultural dimensions of international relations
3.
Apply various international relations theories to the analysis of contemporary
international events and issues.
4.
Utilise specialist knowledge of international relations to identify a topic of global
significance and produce a well-researched report on it for an international news
audience.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:The study of international relations: its relevance to the collection and analysis of global news; theories of International Relations.
The nature and operation of the international system; the changing global economic landscape; challenges to the Liberal International Order; great power rivalry: hard power, soft power, and discursive power.
International law and diplomacy; identity, (in) security and conflict; non-traditional global security challenges (e.g. environment, terrorism, migration, and transnational organised crime).
Technological change and globalisation; non-state and transnational actors;
international trade and economic interdependence global financial forces.
Additional Information:This module offers an opportunity for journalists to pursue a systematic study of international relations relevant to the mainstream news organisations. It enables them to acquire a specialist knowledge of the theory and practice of international
relations and draw upon the analyses and insights of IR scholars in gathering and constructing international news.
