Module Content
Outline Syllabus:- Principles and concepts of health and public health
- Key domains of public health and the public health approach - public health practice
- A broad history of public health development and interventions: local, national and international perspectives
- The health transition: demographic and epidemiological changes over time
- Health policy development
- Health governance and stewardship - role of government and wider non-governmental organisations, business and civil society in improving population based health
- Multi-sectoral collaboration and working in partnerships
- The principles and role of advocacy and actions to protect and improve health
- Social determinants of health
- Inequalities in health: definitions, explanations, impact
- Health and Health in all Policy (HIAP)
- Appraising and evaluating policy and strategies for improving health and reducing health inequalities
Additional Information:This module introduces students to the concepts and key dimensions associated with the public health approach. Key values such as prevention, advocacy, multi-sectoral working and equity are explored and contextualised to local application. The module reviews historical as well as contemporary public health approaches, policies & strategies. Understanding the development of policy and strategies and the role of public health evidence and advocacy in this process is an important element of the programme. There is a particular focus on examining health inequalities and measures to reduce them. The aim is to identify local, national and international strategic responses to both improving health and reducing health inequalities.
