Aims
To introduce students to theoretical concepts surrounding the study of journalism at a post-graduate level. Consideration will be given to a range of subjects including news values (where does news come from, what makes it news, etc), agenda setting
in a news context, gatekeeping (why some news is excluded), representation and stereotyping, the use of language, the business of a newsroom and the effects of online journalism on the news agenda. Students will also be introduced to aspects of law and ethics as they relate to journalism
Learning Outcomes

Have an overview of the business of journalism in Greece.

Appraise how the industry works, including the use of new and developing
technologies.

Be able to apply theoretical concepts to the journalism industry.

Critically analyse journalism practice.

Have an understanding of the major laws and ethical questions relating to
journalism.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Students will be exposed to a range of theoretical concepts relating to journalism. They will gain an understanding of how news is generated, whether or not there is an agenda to news coverage, the differences between print and broadcast journalism, the effects of online and 'citizen' journalism and the general business of news. There will also be an examination of the major legal areas relating to journalism, including contempt of court, defamation, privacy, human rights, freedom of information as well as consideration of ethical issues.
Additional Information:This module will assist students in their understanding of the news media and will impact on their understanding and discussion in other modules on the course
