Aims

The primary aim of the course is to prepare students for practice in family work and to enable students to acquire the relevant knowledge and skills relevant to all stages of family work. The elective will give a grounding in the main areas of concern to a matrimonial solicitor dealing with protection from domestic violence, private child law, marital separation and breakdown, and advising the unmarried family

Learning Outcomes

1.
Analyse factual material when acting for a party to a family dispute, identify the legal context in which factual issues arise and relate the central legal and factual issues to each other
2.
Demonstrate an awareness of different means of resolving disputes in family matters including their attendant costs, benefits and risks
3.
identify the steps and strategies that need to be taken in the preparation and conduct of family litigation
4.
Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the curriculum for family law and practice approved by the Solicitors Regulation Authority at validation in December 2009

Outline Syllabus:Domestic violence remedies in civil and criminal law Private child law Divorce and dissolution Ancillary financial relief on divorce Financial issues arising in the unmarried family.
Additional Information:This is an elective on the LPC as dictated by the relevant professional bodies.
