Aims

This course is designed to equip nurses with the support required to critically appraise the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for the role of the PNA.

This PNA programme will support nurses to develop their existing leadership qualities and skills to facilitate the implementation of the Advocating for Education and Quality Improvement (A-EQUIP) model of supervision in their areas of practice.

 

Learning Outcomes

1.
Critically appraise the role of the PNA in deploying the A-EQUIP Model for registered nurses, providing visible leadership by positively impacting culture that promotes quality improvement resulting in positive outcomes for patients and service users
2.
Critically evaluate the facilitation restorative clinical in practice, appraising the relevant theory and evidence base, ethical and legal considerations, and the complex professional issues/requirements in the provisions of clinical supervision
3.
Critically evaluate and the synthesise the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to lead and manage change to support quality improvement and positively impact patient outcomes
4.
Critically reflect and appraise approaches to both personal and professional development in both self and others, by identifying strategies/methodologies to support learners in practice to continually learn and develop their knowledge and skills
5.
Proficiently demonstrate the ability to meet the competencies required to fulfil the PNA role

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
·       The role of the PNA

·       The PNA implementation guide

·       A-EQIP Model

·       Restorative Clinical Supervision including approaches such as coaching, motivational interviewing, reflection and debriefing

·       Supervisor/supervisee relationship, including practically delivering, recording and managing clinical supervision in practice

·       Ethical & Legal considerations, including clinical governance and reporting

·       Strategies to support staff wellbeing and resilience, including burn out, compassion and self-care

·       Leadership theories, focusing on compassionate leadership and the PNA as a leader

·       Advocacy

·       Quality Improvement, leading and managing change, including QI methodologies and evaluation

·       Strategies to support the implementation of the role in practice

·       Regional and national forums supporting the role of the PNA and ongoing development and support the PNA

·       Approaches to evidence-based practice

·       Self-Awareness, personality types and emotional intelligence

 
Module Overview:
The Professional Nurse Advocate (PNA) programme delivers training and restorative supervision for nurses right across England. PNA training provides those on the programme with skills to facilitate restorative supervision to their colleagues and teams, in nursing and beyond. 
Additional Information:
This module will be delivered as a distance learning module in accordance with the guidelines from the RCN PNA Standards for Education and Training Programmes and Modules (2023). 

Delivery Format:

 

·       Content will be delivered remotely to allow for access to places nationally

·       Content will be delivered over 10 structured days

·       Content will be flexible to accommodate and support staff in the current complex climate of care

·       Structured regular virtual touchpoints will be offered flexibly to accommodate shift working patterns

·       Practical application in the forms of simulated experiences and action learning will be promoted to link theory to practice

·       Regular academic supervision will be available by a designated member of the Programme team both structured and as required throughout

·       Remote content will work through structured portfolio content to support the students in final submission

·       Reflective activities to support development of competency

·       Self-Directed Learning supported by online content
