Aims
Breakdown of delivery hours per week.
There will be 10 hours of total delivery for this Module. This will include 10 hours online / telephone contact focused on the design, preparation and progress of the dissertation. Additional direct contact is made as and when required between the Student and Module and / or Programme lead.
The aim of the dissertation is to develop the ability of the students to analyse and interpret an issue in their chosen field drawing on the relevant body of knowledge, collecting data and competing a piece of writing in a manner conforming to the tenets of disciplined, lucid and critical scholarship.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Demonstrate a critical awareness of the impact and influence policy has, and continues to have, on professional practice in covert investigation and specialist intelligence within the context of, national security, law enforcement and counter-terrorism (Programme Specification Learning Outcome 1)

Apply major theories and concepts to the study of covert investigation and specialist intelligence studies (Programme Specification Learning Outcome 3)
3.
Demonstrate the skills necessary to plan, conduct and report a research project by independently engaging with the subject literature, analyse or and assess it to support critical and normative judgements within security studies and theories with relevant evidence and structured argument (Programme Specification Learning Outcome 4)
4.
Using ICT to identify, access and select effective information collection methods and use the most appropriate analytical tools including the application of numerical skills to cases involving a quantitative dimension (Programme Specification Learning Outcome 9)
5.
Articulate arguments and conclusions based on evidence and that are subject to a well- developed critical appraisal and imaginative judgement (Programme Specification Learning Outcome 10)
6.
In a timely fashion, present and communicate information, in both verbal and written forms and in various formats for different audiences (Programme Specification Learning Outcome 11)

Collaborate and co-operate in working with others to investigate questions or issues relating to covert investigation and specialist intelligence studies, including policing studies, security studies and international relations (Programme Specification Learning Outcome 12)
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:An indicative range of topics includes:
• Introduction: what is the social research?
• The politics of research in a professional environment.
• Ethical issues in research
• Producing a literature review.
• Designing and conducting research
• Using SPSS
• Analysing research data
Additional Information:Mode and Duration of Study: This module will be offered on a full and part-time online basis. There will be a non-mandatory summer intensive study weekend at Liverpool John Moores University.
The University’s online partner (Informa) platform will be utilised to support the delivery of this programme.
The programme will be available from September 2020 with future flexible course intakes to maximise professional practitioner uptake.
Student Support: The University aims to provide students with access to appropriate and timely information, support and guidance to ensure they are able to benefit fully from their time studying at LJMU. All Students will be assigned a Personal Tutor to provide academic support and where necessary signpost Students to appropriate University support services.
Student Advice and Wellbeing Service provide students with advice, support and information, particular in areas of; student funding and financial matters, disability, advice and support to international students, study support, accommodation, health, well-being and counselling.

Attendance Requirement: The programme is undertaken by way of online (distance learning) There will be a non-mandatory summer intensive study weekend at Liverpool John Moores University. Students should complete all online lecturers in line with University regulations.
Method for Evaluating and Improving Quality: All programmes leading to LJMU awards have been designed and approved in accordance with the UK Quality Code for Higher Education, including the Framework for Higher Qualifications in the UK (FHEQ) and subject benchmark statements where applicable. The University is subject to periodic review of its quality and standards by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA). Published review reports from the QAA are available on the QAA website at www.qaa.ac.uk.
The University uses the results of student feedback from internal and external student surveys, module evaluation questionnaires and meetings with student representatives to improve the quality of programmes. The quality of teaching is assured through staff review and staff development in learning, teaching and assessment.
All programmes are reviewed periodically and annually, informed by a range of data, newly published research and feedback to ensure quality and standards of programmes are both maintained and improved.
The University is maintaining the threshold academic standards set for awards in accordance with the Framework for Higher Qualifications in the UK (FHEQ) and applicable benchmark statements. The assessment process measures student achievement rigorously and fairly against intended outcomes of the programme(s) and is conducted in line with the University’s policies and regulation. The academic standards are comparable with those in other UK higher education institutions of which external examiners have experience.
Alignment for CME: For the purpose of CME, this module will be reviewed alongside the MSc in Covert Investigation and Specialist Intelligence. (Course Code 36373)
Alignment to External Examining:
This module will be considered by a Board of Examiners and the same existing arrangements in respect of the External Examiner for the LCAPS MSc in Covert Investigation and Specialist Intelligence. (Course Code 36373) will be utilised. This arrangement will be subject to approval via the appropriate University mechanisms.
