Aims
Output 1:Urban Design Theory Component
To present in two seminars research into a number of key contemporary urban theoretical matters ranging from strategic sustainability, urban order, the impact of transport and the relevance of context. These seminars will be supported by eight lectures on contemporary urban issues and the outputs will feed into the group urban strategy in module 7221AR.
Output 2: Thesis theory and Research
To provide the opportunity to identify and research an area of architectural theory which will inform the design component of module 7222AR. A series of tutorials and reviews will enable a debate about the content whilst seminars will explore specific research methods.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Demonstrate an understanding of theories in urban design and planning, constructing an argument for their design approach through the production of an illustrated report. (GC4.1).
2.
Propose, analyse and evaluate a number of Urban Design precedents through use of diagrams and illustrated reports. (GC4.1).
3.
Prepare a brief for a complex design proposal which illustrates an understanding of the cultural, social, spatial and technological issues which might be encountered. (GC2.1 / 2.2, GC7.2 / 7.3).
4.
Clearly articulate and evidence an understanding of the functional, and organisational basis of the brief for their thesis proposal. (GC2.3).
5.
Explain, through the use of appropriate precedents an understanding of the nature of previous solutions to similar design problems. (GC7.1).
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Output 1: Urban Design theory component
Following a seminar to introduce the module component and its integration with the Urban Design module 7221AR, there will be a series of eight lectures delivered by the staff team which will examine critical issues in contemporary urbanity.
The lectures will range from; the impact of infrastructure, the city as a political space, questions of context, and the luxury of movement.
Output 2: Thesis Research and brief development.
To present through seminars a proposal for a design thesis during semester 2, this proposal should address definition and research of a topic of study together with exploration of precedent. The proposal will be developed by the student through discussion in individual tutorials and group reviews.
