Aims

To introduce the concepts of sustainability to enable an understanding of the importance of construction in the global environmental context. To develop an understanding of the type of sustainability strategies that can be adopted by construction organisations, the barriers to their implementation. To develop a critical approach to management style within organisations and identify approaches to develop leadership skills.

Outline Syllabus:The importance of sustainability- an overview Sustainability in the context of construction Factors which hinder development of sustainability in construction Sustainability strategies Making change happen with specific regard to sustainability: • Leadership v Management • Change management • Morals, ethics and values in a leadership context • Drivers for change in sustainable construction • Empowerment of professionals in construction as a leadership tool • Personal value assessment
Module Overview:
The aim of this module is to introduce the concepts of sustainability to enable an understanding of the importance of construction in the global environmental context. You will develop an understanding of the type of sustainability strategies that can be adopted by construction organisations and the barriers of implementation. You will also develop a critical approach to management style within organisations and identify approaches to develop leadership skills.
Additional Information:The aim of this module is enable students to develop an understanding of the type of sustainability strategies that can be adopted by construction organisations, the barriers to their implementation and how senior managers need to question and develop their leadership styles in order to make real change in construction practices.
