Aims

This module aims to develop the clinical knowledge and skills required by hospital pharmacists for managing medicines in patients that are admitted to hospital

Learning Outcomes

1.
Clinically assess patients’ medicines-related needs when they are admitted to hospital, including an evaluation of the impact of acute illness on pre-existing co-morbidities
2.
Choose, or make recommendations on, the most appropriate treatment for acute problems by applying their knowledge of pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, guidelines and published evidence
3.
Formulate robust and realistic monitoring plans for patients’ medicines, acknowledging the responsibilities of different healthcare professionals

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
  • Assessment of acutely unwell patients
  • Altered drug handling in acute illness
  • Drug administration challenges
  • Management of common reasons for admission / problems encountered during a hospital admission.  The priority areas will normally be:
    • Common infections (e.g. pneumonia, UTI)
    • Healthcare-acquired infections
    • Sepsis
    • Cardiac diseases
    • Respiratory diseases
    • Gastrointestinal diseases
    • Neurological problems
    • Metbolic disorders
    • Management of patients undergoing surgery
    • Management of patients requiring escalated levels of care, including admission to high dependency and intensive care units
Module Overview:
This module is for the PGCert, PGDip and MSc. The module aims to develop the clinical knowledge and skills required by hospital pharmacists for managing medicines in patients that are admitted to hospital.
Additional Information:
The majority of this module involves work-based training under the guidance of a Practice-based tutor (PBT), following a prescribed schedule. The student and PBT are also supported by the Clinical Liaison Tutor team.
