Students will have a sound clinical knowledge base and possess skills that will enable them to examine children, young people and their families safely on completion of the module.
Learning Outcomes

Module Overview:
This module centres on the major physiological systems, building on prior knowledge and expertise. It will go on to inform greater understanding of the causes and management of common childhood illnesses and their diagnosis. It aims to provide an educational package meeting the needs of nurses and other allied professions required to act autonomously within a variety of ambulatory settings, improving the skills and knowledge of those who are the first point of contact for children, young people and their families.

Opportunity for facilitated practice of newly acquired skills within the classroom will be provided. The student will need to practice these skills outside the classroom in their own clinical setting with their clinical mentor.
Assessment
A summative clinical OSCE:
• To demonstrate competence in performing a structured format for physical examination of systems and history taking techniques in children and young people.
This is pass/fail competency assessment. Students must achieve 60% in all elements of this assessment (3 clinical OSCE stations) so as to ensure a safe standard of clinical practice.
The competency element is assessed by academics in the clinical area (practice suites). Students who do not pass the competency will be deemed to have failed the attempt in the module. Assuming they have passed the academic element then they will be referred in the usual manner in the competency element only. If they have failed both components (Exam and competency) then they would be referred in both elements.
This assessment is essential to determine the student’s level of clinical competence within their role of advanced practice. The ultimate goal is to preserve patent safety and enhance quality of that care.
A key element of the preparation for individuals to practice at an advanced level of clinical practice is the formal assessment of achievement of the capabilities, specific to the context of their practice. It is critical to the implementation, acceptance and sustainability of advanced clinical practice that health and care professionals working at this level are widely recognised as having a consistent level of competence. They must also be equally capable of fulfilling the specialist requirements of functioning at this level.
This module has the scope to reflect this as it is underpinned by the elements of advanced clinical practice.
A written exam (2hrs) to
• Demonstrate mastery of applying examination findings to form diagnosis of common childhood complaints
• Demonstrate a critical understanding of professional issues related to expansion of nursing roles
Weighting 100% Pass mark 50%
1. The programme has taken account of the appropriate levels of the Frameworks for Higher Education Qualifications of UK Degree-Awarding Bodies (FHEQ) and is aligned to level 7 descriptors. This is reflected in the module learning outcomes.
2. The module involves classroom attendance, which is further supported by a range of learning support tools. The student will need to practice these skills outside the classroom in their own clinical setting with their clinical mentor. The clinical mentor is not required to complete any documentation.
3. The criteria for admission to the module require that candidates are currently employed and practicing within their professional area. Ideally candidates will have a minimum of a BSc Hons in Higher Education associated with their professional role. Students enrolled on a post-registration Post Graduate Diploma, within the University, will have to access this module on the condition that 7153PCCPMM module details have been noted within the programme specification.
4. The final Continuing Professional Development award is – Paediatric clinical examination and minor illness.
5. The students will have access to a VLE site and the University's other range of electronic support such as access to the electronic library facilities. The module VLE site reflects contemporary reading lists and links to journal articles. The module VLE site also includes a number of presentations/videos for students to access on areas such as clinical assessment and clinical examination as well as library support. The students also have access to the module leader through phone
